The first ever print edition of The Odford English Dictionary is now available. The book, which contains 500 hand-picked New Meanings will be available on Amazon (and other good bookshops) soon - and you can get an advance copy now from my store.
The Odford English Dictionary was originally an email, circulating around the Aurora Project Team in 2003. Containing a list of funny definitions for common words on the project, the email grew quickly until we knew it had to be put online.
The first website was created in 2003 and displayed the entries to the public for the first time. The reaction to the alternative meanings to words was so great that functionality was added to allow the general public to make their own suggestions.
In October 2008, a brand new website was created to help manage the suggestions being made. The features of the new site include AJAX-enabled ratings, complex abuse-detection and account limiting algorithms and restful URLs.
Amazingly, even with thousands of entries, people still manage to come up with new funny meanings.
Take a look at the Odford site now and sign up to suggest some new meanings.
