Car Insurance Comparison Sucks
Wednesday, 15th June 2011
Car Insurance Comparison engines suck. Some more than others - not because of the prices but because of poor usability. I mean, seriously, the whole point is to make the process easier so how come the whole page suddenly reloads when I change a drop-down-list four scrolls from the top of the page.
The price is also a problem - please note that I've typed in all the same details several times to find out the following results (please note that everyone will get different results, and that different comparison engines will be the best one for different people... i.e. don't take this information to mean that Compare The Market will be the best site for you - just because it was on this occasion for me!)
- Confused: £446
- Go Compare: £421
- Money Supermarket: £410
- Compare The Market: £318
So that's a difference of £128 between the best and worst quote. What a shocker. And in actual fact, the same insurer who offered me £318 through Compare The Market were also top on one of the other searches.
Remember, I'm not saying that any of these comparison engines is better than any other - but the fact I had to use four in order to get the best deal means that, in actual fact, I am the comparison engine, not the computer. These websites are supposed to make it easier by allowing us to type in our details just once and get the best offer - now we're back to typing our information in many times - just like we did before we even had comparison engines.
I am also now convinced that the "Compare The Meerkat" adverts are totally ineffectual, despite being really popular. I have seen the adverts. I have done the "simples" catch-phrase. I know all about those little critters - but I typed in Go Compare and Confused because I could remember them, and I had to search Google for "car insurance" to remember about Money Supermarket and Compare The Market.
Note to other comparison websites... I didn't find you and I probably couldn't be bothered to type in the details again anyhow.
Who did I go for in the end? You should know better than to ask!
