Get To Know Your Social Audience

These days, social media is rather fragmented. Each individual has to decide where they want to hang out, whether it be Twitter, Facebook, MySpace (it still exists), Google+ or any one of a massive list of potential online haunts. Quite often, the selection is based on where your real-life friends are hanging out, so if they are mostly on Twitter, you'll join up there to get involved in the conversation, or if they are mostly on Facebook then that is where you'll head.

As you may have read on the press page, I was recently lucky enough to have one of my jQuery plugins selected for an article in Smashing Magazine. The article was published on the 27th April 2010.

If you have ever wondered what this kind of publicity can do, take a look at the graph at the bottom of this article. Quite simply, the traffic sky-rocketed and remained very busy for the rest of the month. Smashing Magazine have over 200,000 subscribers to their RSS feed and almost 200,000 followers on Twitter and this resulted in the 28th of April being the busiest ever day for this website.

I ought to point out that the smallest columns actually represent rather busy days also - this website has been steadily growing over the past few years - so this underlines just what a big day the 28th April was.
