For those with a long memory, you might remember when I updated my website back in 2009 to use HTML 5. On the whole it was a fairly easy task, given that all of the really cool browsers already have one eye on HTML 5, but there was a bit of work to do to get it working in all browsers (see the HTML 5 Browser Test for more on that).

The important bit of all of that work to get HTML 5 working on my website was to try out using the tags in the right way, for example, having nested articles with headers, sections and footers and using the navigation element to properly designate the main menu on the page.

It wasn't until I recently added the "latest blog entry" to the front page that I realised that I had an excellent opportunity to make use of another HTML 5 tag. The "aside" tag. This tag is for marking a bit of content as "related to, but not part of" the current article. It essentially tells the browser that you're going of on a tangent. This is an excellent way to semantically mark-up your website and you can see it in action on my home page.
