Having been snowed-in once and stuck in snow-related traffic on another occasion, I have heard plenty of reports and opinions on how terribly we deal with snow in Britain. The main problem seems to be that we don't get "proper" snow often enough to invest in the equipment required to drive on it, shift it out of the way and otherwise force nature away from our transport system.

However, today I experienced a new phenomena as road once again came to a stand-still due to snow. Only, this time - the snow never actually fell.

That's right, for some reason, the announcement on national radio that there "may be some snow" seemed to have the same effect as actual snow, with motorways and junctions becoming grid-locked.

Perhaps this explains the real reason we have such a hard time when it snows: when people hear that it might be a white-out they all jump in their cars to get a piece of the action (maybe so they can all have a "the day I spend 6 hours snowed-in on the motorway" story).
